'The Missing Bell' Dining Experience

Picture
Philosophy
"We are not simply in the business of being just a B&B or even a private dining place; they are vehicles for our real objective. We are driven by the ambition of delivering a ‘memorable experience’.

A ‘good experience’ for guests, demands exceptional service and outstanding hospitality; a ‘memorable experience’ is created by the combination of exquisite cuisine, friendship and happiness."

An evangelist for healthy, wholesome home-cooking
“It is the antidote to microwave ready meals, take-away fat, high salt content restaurant meals and moreover, good, healthy, home cooking could possibly help to combat rising obesity and diabetes. I also hope that a renaissance of healthy home-cooking could restore some of the lost benefits of family life, as generations share their meal-times together once again”.

Dinner, Bed and Breakfast

To complement the international cuisine of our dining experience menus, we prepare a unique range of gourmet breakfasts designed to provide a balanced injection of vitamins, fibre and nutrients from menus to excite the taste buds. So come for dinner and stay for breakfast at 'The Missing Bell'.

The Slow Food Movement

The Missing Bell is a celebration of good home cooking from around the world. Here is an opportunity to enjoy the conviviality that should accompany good food; conversation, comradeship, friendship and laughter, with our fellow humans.

Eating at The Missing Bell is an evening experience and is part of a Slow Food movement that originated in Italy in 1989 and is now spreading throughout Europe. So we source seasonal local produce wherever possible. From the enjoyment of canapés through four, five, six or even the eight courses of a Japanese banquet, to coffees afterwards, relaxing in good company with time to talk to each other, is at the heart of the experience.

If you want to eat quickly and rush to the cinema, then our Dining Experience evenings are not suitable for you.

If you are a family, friends, or distant relatives, that enjoy eating good food together in a convivial atmosphere, then we hope that 'The Missing Bell' is just right for you.

The Salt Free Kitchen and More . . .

We operate a salt free kitchen where no salt is added and we use salt free butter (sparingly). We avoid factory produced products that have salt, preservatives and chemical additives except for soy sauce where we use a low salt version. Our own sauces are made for the moment of cooking. We do not add sugar or MSG to savoury food or chemical flavour enhancers of any kind.

And yes, our freshly baked bread products are made without adding salt.

Don't be put off by this, our food is flavourful, exciting and not bland.

'Made for the Moment'

Our kitchen operates a  J.I.T. procurement and provisioning policy for freshness of produce, so everything happens Just-In-Time.

We purchase on the basis of local, organic and fair-trade produce as our procurement priorities.

We are registered supporters of the Orkney Fair Trade Group.

Our kitchen's principle source of fresh vegetables is selected from local Island producers, providing a source of fresh-from-the-earth, seasonal food with ecologically friendly, very low ‘food miles’.
